Why wrong answers are engineered, not random
Every R&W question gives you one credited answer and three distractors. Those three are not filler. Test writers build each one to catch a specific reader doing a specific thing: reading too fast, trusting the ear, matching a vibe instead of the text. A distractor nobody falls for is a wasted slot, so each wrong choice is tuned to feel right to someone, and that someone is usually a strong reader running on instinct.
This is good news. A random test would be unlearnable. An engineered one has a blueprint, and the blueprint repeats. Learn the six shapes and you stop meeting new traps. You start recognizing old ones.
The six shapes

1. Out-of-text (unsupported)
The choice makes a claim the passage never backs. It is not contradicted, it is simply not there. It lands because it sounds true in the real world or sits next to the topic.
Example: a passage describes a botanist cataloguing drought-resistant grasses. A choice states that these grasses could cut farming costs worldwide. The passage never says it. The tell: demand the exact sentence of proof. If you cannot underline the clause that forces the claim, it is out-of-text, however reasonable it sounds. Full method in the out-of-text answers guide.
2. Flipped (contradicted, wrong direction)
The choice reverses the text. It says the opposite of what the passage states, or assigns the author a stance they argue against. It is the mirror image of shape 1: instead of no support, it has support pointing the wrong way.
Example: the passage says a new bus lane cut average commute times. A choice claims the lane made commutes longer. Same topic, wrong direction. The tell: before you judge content, check the arrow. Mark whether the text goes up or down, for or against, and throw out any choice whose arrow points the wrong way.
3. Too strong (overstated)
The choice is directionally right but overshoots. An extreme word (always, never, prove, impossible), an over-claimed certainty, or a connective that asserts more than the text licenses. The gist is correct; the degree is not.
Example: the passage says a study suggests a link between sleep and memory. A choice says the study proves sleep controls memory. "Suggests" became "proves." The tell: match the temperature of the answer to the temperature of the text. The SAT rewards the most defensible, least overclaimed choice, so when a milder correct answer exists, its stronger twin is the trap. See too-strong answers.
4. True-but-irrelevant (off-claim)
The choice is accurate and pulled straight from the passage, but it answers a different question than the one asked. It supports a claim you were not asked about. This is the single most common trap on Command of Evidence.
Example: the stem asks for evidence that a finch species expanded its range. A choice cites a real, in-passage detail about the finch's diet. True, in-text, wrong target. The tell: read the stem's claim first and write what the answer must do, then test each choice against that exact target instead of against "is this true?" 5. Wrong relationship (wrong connective)
On transition questions, every distractor is a real transition word that encodes the wrong logical link. The word is legitimate; the relationship it signals does not match the two sentences.
Example: two sentences that add to each other, joined by a choice that says "However," forcing a contrast that is not there. The tell: read sentence two and name the relationship yourself before you look at the words. That is the Same-or-Opposite Test, and it kills half the choices on contact. 6. Wrong meaning in context
On Words-in-Context, the choice is a real word that fits the slot grammatically and reads smoothly, but its meaning contradicts the context clue. Sometimes it is the everyday sense of a word that has several senses; sometimes the connotation clashes with the passage's tone.
Example: the sentence needs a word meaning "held back and guarded," and a choice offers "reserved" in the sense of "set aside in advance." Right word, wrong sense. The tell: predict what the blank must mean from the clue in your own plain words, cover the choices, then reveal and match. Reject any word that fails the prediction, however familiar it sounds. Name the trap in review: the One-Sentence Autopsy
Knowing the six shapes does nothing until you use them where it counts, which is in review, not on the test. After every miss, write one sentence naming the exact shape you fell for. Not "careless." Not "silly mistake." The shape: "I picked a too-strong answer because I liked how confident it sounded." We call this the One-Sentence Autopsy, and "careless" is banned from it, because "careless" is just a shape you have not named yet.
Two or three sessions of honest autopsies and a pattern falls out. Most students do not fall for all six shapes evenly. They have one or two that eat most of their wasted points, and the naming is what surfaces it.
Which shapes hit which question types
The shapes are not spread randomly across the section. They cluster.
- Command of Evidence lives on true-but-irrelevant: a real fact aimed at the wrong claim.
- Text Structure, Central Ideas, and Inference run on out-of-text and flipped: plausible claims with no proof, or claims that reverse the passage.
- Words-in-Context is almost entirely wrong meaning in context.
- Transitions are entirely wrong relationship, by construction.
- Too strong is the crossover trap. It shows up anywhere a claim can be inflated, from inference to synthesis.
Knowing the map means that when you see the question type, you already know which shape to hunt. On a Words-in-Context item you look for the word whose meaning fails the clue. On Command of Evidence you ask, of every choice, "true, but does it hit the stated claim?"
The method: one blade for all six
Here is the whole method in three moves, and it is the same three whatever the shape.
- Commit before you peek. Decide what the answer must do or mean before you read the choices, so you are not handed the traps to react to. This is Predict-Then-Peek, and it starves anchoring, the leak that makes distractors work in the first place.
- Kill three, do not pick one. Your job is elimination. Walk the choices, ask which shape each one is, and cut it by name. This is Kill-Three: you are not searching for the right answer, you are convicting the three wrong ones.
- Autopsy every miss by shape. In review, name the shape in one sentence. That is what turns a taxonomy you read into a reflex you own.
